Hey neighbors, Dan Firks Team here in the heart of Naperville! If you’re searching for classical music events in Naperville this winter or ways to enjoy live orchestral performances in DuPage County, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra’s “Radiant Voices” concert on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 3:30 PM stands out as a highlight of their 2025-26 season, Radiant Reflections. Held at the beautiful Wentz Concert Hall on the North Central College campus (171 East Chicago Avenue, right in downtown Naperville), this afternoon program delivers an emotionally charged experience blending contemporary American flair with timeless Romantic depth. It’s the perfect way to spend a crisp February Sunday, soaking in world-class music steps from the Riverwalk, local cafes, and our favorite shops.
The concert opens with Frank Ticheli’s Radiant Voices, a powerful orchestral fantasy the composer describes as “raucous, free-wheeling, and [wholly] American.” Known mostly for his wind ensemble works, Ticheli crafted this piece shortly after the 1992 Los Angeles riots, channeling the full spectrum of emotions from tragedy and chaos to hope and resilience. It serves as a poignant tone poem, exploring societal upheaval through vivid orchestration that feels urgent yet ultimately uplifting. Ticheli, a Professor Emeritus at the University of Southern California, has seen his music performed widely, and Radiant Voices shines as a beacon of optimism amid darkness, making it especially resonant today.
The second half anchors with Antonín Dvořák’s monumental Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104, one of the most beloved and technically demanding works in the cello repertoire. This deeply expressive masterpiece, composed in 1894-95 during Dvořák’s time in America, weaves folk-inspired melodies with heartfelt lyricism and dramatic intensity. The soloist is internationally acclaimed cellist Leland Ko, a rising star with “disarming charisma” (South Florida Classical Review) and a style that excels in both poetic longing and bold outbursts (Boston Classical Review). Born in 1998 of Chinese-Canadian descent and raised in the Boston area, Leland has claimed first prizes at major competitions like the 2024 Naumburg International Cello Competition, the Concours Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, and the Concert Artists Guild Louis and Susan Meisel Competition. A graduate of Princeton University (A.B. in German Literature), The Juilliard School (M.M.), and the New England Conservatory (Artist Diploma), he performs on a rare Giovanni Battista Rugeri cello from around 1710. His appearances span Carnegie Hall, Symphony Hall in Boston, and venues across Europe, Asia, and beyond, bringing fresh energy to this Romantic gem.
Under Maestra Barbara Schubert’s leadership, the all-volunteer DuPage Symphony Orchestra (over 100 talented musicians) continues its tradition of excellence, having been named Community Orchestra of the Year by the Illinois Council of Orchestras multiple times. This concert fits their mission to inspire appreciation for symphonic music, provide accessible experiences, and foster community through diverse programming. With a strong commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion, the DSO creates welcoming spaces for all backgrounds.
