Naperville Municipal Band: Dianne Hutchison’s 50th Anniversary

Some anniversaries get a plaque and a handshake. This one gets a bandshell, a lawn full of neighbors, and a free concert on a warm Thursday night. On August 6, the Naperville Municipal Band celebrates fifty years of Dianne Hutchison performing with the band, and the whole town is invited to sit in.

That milestone is what the evening is built around. The band has not published the program in advance, so treat the music as a surprise and come for the moment instead: a community ensemble taking a night to honor one of its own, in front of the neighbors who have been listening to her play for decades. Expect the applause to run a little longer than usual.

It is a nice bit of symmetry that the celebration happens in the building the town put up for exactly this. The Naperville Community Concert Center was added to the Elmer Koerner Memorial Bandshell in 2003, with a large performance stage and acoustic equipment, and the city describes it as a facility designed to house and showcase the Municipal Band and other community performing arts groups. How a Thursday Night in Central Park Actually Works

The format has barely changed in generations, and that is the appeal. People start drifting in well before the downbeat, stake out a patch of grass, unpack dinner, and let the kids run until the first note. The concert itself runs roughly 90 minutes and wraps up around 9:00 p.m.

Parking and Walking In

Central Park sits a block off the Riverwalk in the middle of downtown, which is excellent news for dinner and slightly trickier news for parking. If you would rather skip the curbside hunt entirely, park at the south end of downtown and walk in along the Riverwalk. It is a pleasant ten minutes and it doubles as the pre-concert stroll.

Otherwise, the city runs several public decks and their upper levels are free. These are the three that make sense for a concert night:

• Van Buren Parking Deck, 43 W Van Buren Ave: entrances at Van Buren and Benton, which puts you a short walk from the bandshell.
• Central Parking Facility, 75 E Chicago Ave: another easy downtown option with free upper levels.
• Municipal Center Parking Deck, 400 S Eagle St: free on weekday evenings after 5:00 p.m., so it works nicely for a 7:30 start.
