BrightSide Theatre Summer in the Parks: Classic Broadway

Broadway does not usually turn up at a neighborhood ball field, and it almost never turns up free. On Sunday, August 16, BrightSide Theatre brings Classic Broadway to Arrowhead Park on Naperville’s north side: one hour of show tunes on an open lawn, no ticket required.

It runs 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., which may be the friendliest hour on the entire summer calendar. Late enough that the day has cooled off, early enough that small kids are still cheerful and dinner still happens on time. If you are hunting for things to do in Naperville this weekend that genuinely work for a mixed-age group, an hour of Broadway standards on the grass is an easy yes.

One Hour, Five Singers, and a Live Band

BrightSide Theatre’s Summer in the Parks revue is built around five singers backed by four live musicians working through Broadway classics. No song list is published in advance, and the format is better for it. A revue like this is designed to move briskly through the standards rather than linger on any one of them.

An hour is also exactly the right length for an outdoor show with children in the audience. Nobody has to negotiate an intermission, and you are back in the car before anyone melts down.

Live musicians matter more here than they might sound on paper. A backing track in an open park tends to thin out and blow sideways. A real band holds the sound together, and a small ensemble outdoors gives the singers something to actually play off. It is the difference between a concert and a karaoke afternoon.

A Neighborhood Park, Not the Riverwalk

This is worth flagging, because most of Naperville’s free summer music happens downtown or along the Riverwalk. Arrowhead Park is a different animal. It sits at 711 Iroquois Ave up on the north side, a residential park with open lawn, a playground, and ball fields rather than a bandshell and a purpose-built concert lawn.

That changes a few practical things. There is no downtown parking deck to fall back on, so plan on street parking along Iroquois Avenue and the surrounding blocks, and give yourself a few extra minutes to walk in. There is no fixed seating either, so whatever you carry in is what you sit on. On the upside, the playground means kids can burn off the last of their energy before the singing starts, and you are not competing with downtown dinner traffic for a space.

Facilities are what you would expect from a residential park rather than a venue, so handle the bathroom stop before you arrive and bring your own water. A 5:00 p.m. August start also means the sun is still up and still has opinions, so scan for a shaded edge of the lawn when you pick your spot, or accept that the first half hour is a sunglasses situation.

The Final Stop on a Summer-Long Tour

Classic Broadway has been touring Naperville parks all summer, and Arrowhead is where it ends.

The tour design is worth appreciating: rather than parking the show in one venue and asking the city to come to it, the Park District and BrightSide moved it around, from the 95th Street plaza on the south side to the Carillon downtown to a pair of neighborhood parks. Arrowhead gets the finale, and it is the most low-key stop of the five.

Every earlier date started at 7:00 p.m., which makes Arrowhead’s 5:00 p.m. Sunday slot both the outlier and the closer. If the July shows slipped past you, this is the last chance until next summer. The four stops that came before it:
