Naperville September 11 Remembrance Ceremony (25th Anniversary)

As the sun begins to set over downtown Naperville on Friday, September 11, 2026, residents and visitors are invited to gather at the Cmdr. Dan Shanower September 11 Memorial along the Riverwalk. This free community event, organized by the City of Naperville in partnership with Naperville Responds for Veterans, marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with a solemn evening tribute.

Residents, veterans, first responders, and visitors alike are welcome to stand together in reflection at one of the nation’s first completed September 11 memorials.

The Cmdr. Dan Shanower Memorial and Its Story

This annual gathering honors the victims and heroes of 9/11, including Naperville native Naval Cmdr. Dan Shanower, who perished at the Pentagon. The memorial itself, one of the first completed in the nation and dedicated in 2003, features a striking sculpture with artifacts from the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and Flight 93 site.
