Glen Ellyn’s McAninch Arts Center is hosting an orchestral journey that brings Scotland to life in three strikingly different pieces. New Philharmonic: A Tribute to Scotland brings the New Philharmonic, the MAC’s own professional orchestra, to the Belushi Performance Hall for two performances.

Whether you’re a longtime classical enthusiast or simply looking for an evening or afternoon out, the concert is a short drive from downtown Naperville.

A Weekend of Scottish Music Near Naperville

Mark your calendar for Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. or Sunday, October 25 at 3 p.m. The New Philharmonic presents three works that paint Scotland in vivid musical color: Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 “Scottish,” Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy and Peter Maxwell Davies’ An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise, complete with a live bagpiper. The guest artist is David Taylor, violin.

Why You Can’t Miss New Philharmonic: A Tribute to Scotland in Glen Ellyn

The New Philharmonic is led by Music Director and Conductor Kirk Muspratt, and the MAC notes that the orchestra has called the College of DuPage home for 50 years. This program celebrates Scotland through the music of Mendelssohn, Bruch and Peter Maxwell Davies.

With a Saturday evening concert and a Sunday afternoon matinee, it is easy to fit into a weekend for longtime subscribers and first-time visitors alike.

What to Expect at the Performance

Mendelssohn’s beloved “Scottish” symphony captures the grandeur of ancient ruins and windswept landscapes, while Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy is a virtuosic showpiece woven from traditional Scottish tunes. Davies’ showpiece captures a raucous island wedding heralded by a live bagpiper.

  • Guest artist: David Taylor, violin
  • Two performances: Saturday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 25 at 3 p.m.
  • Both performances are in the Belushi Performance Hall
