Prepare to be mesmerized by the resonant, warm tones of the marimba as the world-renowned Heartland Marimba ensemble comes to the Lisle and Warrenville area on January 11, 2026. This special performance is part of their ambitious Season XI, specifically the fifth tour of eleven, titled ‘Expanse.’ The concert features the incredible talents of three master marimbists: Matthew Coley (founder and artistic director), Nathaniel Holman, and Sophia Lo. Together, they bring to life a program that spans the gap between rigorous classical masterworks and vibrant, contemporary pop-inspired creations.

Heartland Marimba is far more than a simple musical trio; it is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the classical marimba art form. Since its inception in 2014, the organization has produced over 250 concerts in more than 50 cities across the United States. Their mission is to create a viable market for marimba artists and to expose diverse audiences—especially those in smaller or under-served communities—to the breathtaking versatility of this ‘grand soloist’ of the percussion family. The ‘Expanse’ tour is a testament to this mission, showcasing music that is as visually engaging as it is aurally stunning.

Attendees of the January 11th performance can expect a diverse and thrilling repertoire. The evening’s program includes works such as the ‘Samba’ from Divertimento for Three Marimbas by Takayoshi Yoshioka, the passionate ‘Por una Cabeza’ by Carlos Gardel (arranged by Matthew Coley), and the intricate ‘Fugue no. 6, Op. 35’ by Felix Mendelssohn (arranged by Sophia Lo). The performance will also feature modern compositions like Robert Sanderl’s ‘(a)symmetry’ and the high-energy ‘Danzas Argentinas’ by Alberto Ginastera. Fans of traditional classical music will delight in the group’s rendition of J.S. Bach’s ‘Toccata and Fugue in D Minor,’ while the whimsical ‘Please Pay Us–We Play Marimba for a Living’ by Ujjal Bhattacharyya adds a touch of modern humor. The concert concludes with a virtuosic display in Franz Liszt’s ‘Grand galop chromatique,’ a piece guaranteed to showcase the ‘zippy hands’ and technical precision that have made Heartland Marimba a favorite of critics and audiences alike.

Choosing Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Warrenville as the venue provides an intimate acoustic setting that perfectly complements the marimba’s deep, woody resonance. The church’s atmosphere allows the nuances of the four-mallet technique—an evolutionary path in percussion that Heartland Marimba works tirelessly to document and promote—to shine through. This concert is an invitation to witness the beauty of ‘singing wood’ in a live environment, where the visual dance of the mallets is as important as the sound itself.

Heartland Marimba continues to lead the way in percussion education and repertoire generation. With over 85 works published and 30 commissions to their name, they are the primary drivers of the contemporary marimba movement. By attending this concert, you are not only enjoying a world-class musical event but also supporting a legacy of artistic innovation. The event is free to attend, though a suggested donation of $25 is encouraged to help sustain the organization’s ongoing tours and educational initiatives. Whether you are a lifelong fan of percussion or a newcomer curious about the ‘grand soloist’ of the orchestra, the Heartland Marimba Concert on January 11th promises an unforgettable experience of artistry and passion.
