Experience one of Naperville’s most cherished and enduring traditions: the Naperville Municipal Band Summer Concert Series. Since its founding in 1859, the Naperville Municipal Band (NMB) has been the heartbeat of the community’s cultural life, providing world-class musical entertainment in a setting that feels like a step back into a simpler, more communal time. As the 2026 season kicks off this June, locals and visitors alike are invited to gather at the iconic Central Park Band Shell for an evening of melody, community, and celebration under the stars.
Every Thursday evening throughout the summer, the ‘stage door goes up’ at 7:30 PM, signaling the start of a musical journey that spans genres and generations. The band, currently composed of approximately 100 dedicated musicians, brings a professional level of artistry to every performance. Under the longtime leadership of Music Director Ron Keller—who has been at the podium since 1966—and supported by a talented team of assistant conductors and narrators, the NMB delivers a repertoire that includes everything from stirring John Philip Sousa marches and classical overtures to modern Broadway showstunes, jazz standards, and popular movie themes. Each week features a unique theme, ensuring that no two concerts are ever the same.
The venue itself, the Community Concert Center in Central Park, is a masterpiece of design. Built as an addition to the Elmer Koerner Memorial Bandshell in 2003, it features state-of-the-art acoustics and a beautiful mural titled ‘The Great Concerto’ on its stage door, which pays homage to the band’s long history. The park’s lush green lawn and historic gazebo provide the perfect backdrop for a quintessential American summer night. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early with their blankets, lawn chairs, and picnic baskets. For many Naperville families, the pre-concert picnic is as much a part of the tradition as the music itself.
Adding to the community spirit, each concert hosts a local non-profit organization that provides delicious homemade baked goods for sale and conducts a raffle. This tradition not only satisfies the audience’s sweet tooth but also supports the vital work of various community groups, from the Naperville Woman’s Club to local scout troops and service organizations. It is this intersection of art and service that makes the NMB concerts truly special.
Whether you are a lifelong resident who grew up listening to the band or a newcomer looking for a family-friendly way to spend a summer evening, the NMB Summer Concert Series offers something for everyone. Children can be seen dancing in front of the stage, while older generations lean back in their chairs, reminiscing about summers past. The atmosphere is inclusive, relaxed, and entirely free of charge. Parking is available in the various downtown Naperville lots and the nearby municipal center, though walking from a local dinner spot is a highly recommended way to soak in the downtown charm. Join us this summer at 104 E. Benton Ave and discover why the Naperville Municipal Band is often called the ‘Pride of Naperville.’
