Experience one of the Midwest’s most cherished musical traditions: the Naperville Municipal Band Summer Concert Series. For over 160 years, the Naperville Municipal Band has been the heartbeat of downtown Naperville, providing world-class outdoor entertainment that brings together families, friends, and music lovers of all generations. Every Thursday evening from early June through mid-August, the historic Central Park transforms into a vibrant community gathering space where the air is filled with the stirring sounds of marches, show tunes, and classical favorites.
The 2026 season continues the band’s incredible legacy, which dates back to 1859. Under the baton of esteemed conductors and featuring the iconic narrations of local legends, each concert is meticulously themed to provide a unique experience. Whether it is a tribute to the Great American Songbook, a patriotic celebration around the Fourth of July featuring the ‘1812 Overture’ complete with live cannon fire, or ‘Big Band Night’ featuring the NMB Jazz Band, there is something for every musical palate. The performance takes place at the state-of-the-art Community Concert Center, a facility specifically designed to showcase the band’s rich, acoustic power. One of the most striking features of the venue is ‘The Great Concerto’ mural by Century Walk, which graces the stage doors and serves as a backdrop to the summer festivities.
Attending a Naperville Municipal Band concert is about more than just the music; it is a full sensory experience and a staple of the local lifestyle. We encourage attendees to arrive early to secure a prime spot on the lawn. Bring your favorite lawn chairs or a comfortable picnic blanket. Many regulars make a full evening of it, packing gourmet picnic baskets or picking up takeout from one of the many award-winning restaurants in downtown Naperville. A long-standing and beloved tradition of the concert series is the weekly bake sale hosted by various local non-profit organizations. From homemade cookies to brownies and pies, these treats offer a sweet way to support community groups while enjoying the show. The atmosphere is undeniably welcoming—children play on the grass, neighbors catch up on the week’s news, and the sunset provides a natural light show over the park.
The Naperville Municipal Band itself is composed of over 70 dedicated musicians from all walks of life—teachers, doctors, engineers, and professional musicians—all united by their passion for performance and their commitment to the city. Their skill is evident in the precision of their marches and the delicate phrasing of their soloists. As the 7:30 PM start time approaches, the buzz of the crowd settles into a respectful hush, broken only by the crack of the conductor’s baton. For the next 90 minutes, you will be transported through the history of band music, from the golden age of John Philip Sousa to contemporary compositions and modern movie scores. Admission to these concerts has always been free, reflecting the band’s mission to promote music appreciation and serve as a gift to the people of Naperville. Don’t miss your chance to be part of this living history and create summer memories that will last a lifetime.
