Are you looking for a place where you can discuss the latest political headlines without the stress of a formal debate? Welcome to Sundays Drinking Liberally, the Naperville chapter of the internationally acclaimed Living Liberally network. This long-standing tradition offers a relaxed, informal, and inclusive environment for progressive individuals, left-leaning thinkers, and curious neighbors to gather over a pint (or a soda) and share ideas. Founded on the principle that political engagement should be social and accessible, Drinking Liberally has become a cornerstone of the local grassroots community in Naperville and the surrounding western suburbs of Chicago.

Every second Sunday of the month, the back room or designated tables at Quigley’s Irish Pub transform into a hub of progressive thought. The atmosphere is intentionally laid-back—there are no dues, no required reading lists, and no pressure to be a policy expert. Whether you are a seasoned activist, a campaign volunteer, or someone who simply wants to vent about the news cycle with like-minded people, you will find a welcoming seat at the table. The group encourages ‘liberal’ drinking—not in the sense of excess, but in the spirit of generosity, open-mindedness, and community spirit. It is a space where it is never taboo to talk politics, and where the conversation can range from local zoning laws to global climate initiatives.

Quigley’s Irish Pub, located in the heart of historic downtown Naperville, provides the perfect backdrop for these gatherings. Known for its authentic wood-paneled interior and classic pub fare, the venue offers a cozy, ‘Old World’ charm that fosters genuine connection. Participants often arrive early to grab a bite from the extensive menu, featuring everything from traditional Fish and Chips to hearty burgers. While the group is centered around political discourse, the social aspect is paramount. Friendships formed at Drinking Liberally often extend beyond the pub, leading to collaborative community projects, canvassing efforts, and a stronger local support network.

Living Liberally, the parent organization, started in a dive bar in New York City in 2003 and has since expanded to hundreds of chapters across the United States. The Naperville chapter remains one of the most active in Illinois, consistently providing a consistent lighthouse for progressives in a historically conservative region. By meeting on a Sunday evening, the event offers a perfect ‘low-stakes’ way to wrap up the weekend and recharge your activist batteries for the week ahead. The event is free to attend, though guests are responsible for their own food and drink tabs. We encourage everyone to ‘tip liberally’ to support the hardworking staff at Quigley’s who host us year-round. Come for the politics, stay for the people, and leave feeling more connected to your community.
